Train<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The train is the most popular public transport option to get from Athens to Kalambaka. All stations are marked on the map above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transfer<\/strong>: there used to be a direct train to Kalambaka, but in recent years, due to track issues, you now need to switch to a bus in Paleofarsalos. Don\u2019t worry\u2014the change is easy and well signposted. It\u2019s not a regular bus, but a shuttle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Travel time<\/strong>: the train from Athens to Paleofarsalos takes about 3 hours; then the bus from Paleofarsalos to Kalambaka takes around 2 hours. Add another 15 to 30 minutes for the transfer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arrival<\/strong>: the station in Kalambaka is very close to the town center. If you\u2019re staying there, you can just walk to your hotel\u2014no taxi needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Frequency<\/strong>: usually a couple of trains in each direction during low season; in high season it increases to around four.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Price<\/strong>: from about 31 euros per trip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Where to get the tickets<\/strong>: on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hellenictrain.gr\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-modified-href=\"https:\/\/www.hellenictrain.gr\/en\">official website<\/a><\/strong>, although I prefer using <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Transporte Atenas Kalambaka\" href=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/en\/recomendado\/transporte-atenas-kalambaka-EN\/\" data-modified-href=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/recomendado\/transporte-atenas-kalambaka?trp-edit-translation=preview\">this one<\/a><\/strong> because it works better. Once in Meteora, having a car also makes it much easier to get around and visit the monasteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Driving time<\/strong>: between 3.5 and 4 hours, depending on traffic when leaving Athens.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Roads<\/strong>: most of the route is on highways and in good condition. It\u2019s an easy drive, nothing too complicated, and everything is well signposted in English.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Car rental cost<\/strong>: prices vary quite a bit depending on the season and, of course, the type of car. To give you an idea, in low season I\u2019ve paid as little as 9 euros for a small car for three days; in high season, it can be around 70\u201380 euros for the same period. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fuel and tolls<\/strong>: expect around 40\u201350 euros extra in total.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"translation-block\"><strong>Where to rent<\/strong>: in Athens you\u2019ll find all the international car rental companies, although I recommend <strong><a class=\"thirstylink\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Alquilar un coche en Atenas\" href=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/en\/recomendado\/alquilar-un-coche-en-atenas-EN\/\" data-modified-href=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/recomendado\/alquilar-un-coche-en-atenas?trp-edit-translation=preview\">this website<\/a><\/strong>\u2014I\u2019ve always found the best prices there.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2714\ufe0f Requirements to rent a car<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passport<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Valid driver\u2019s license with at least 1 year of experience; sometimes they ask for more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International driving permit if you\u2019re coming from outside the European Union.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Credit card; this is for the deposit, and debit cards are usually not accepted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be at least 21\u201325 years old (depending on the company).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"caja-linea\">Keep in mind that there are no gas stations in the Meteora monastery area; you\u2019ll need to fill up in the nearby towns.
