Kata Beach: surf and sunset <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kata is one of the most popular beaches in Phuket. During wave season (mid-April to mid-October), it\u2019s one of the best surfing spots, whether you\u2019re a beginner or intermediate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of the year, the sea is calm and perfect for snorkeling, especially in the southern area. The north is riskier because of strong currents. From there, you can swim to Ko Pu, where I\u2019ve heard there\u2019s plenty of coral and marine life\u2014but I\u2019ve never tried it since the currents didn\u2019t look safe.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/atardecer-en-kata-beach.jpg\" alt=\"sunset-at-kata-beach\" class=\"wp-image-6822\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/atardecer-en-kata-beach.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/atardecer-en-kata-beach-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Kata has a lively vibe, with food and drink stalls at both ends and several restaurants on the left side (facing the sea) that are perfect for lunch or catching the sunset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And speaking of sunsets, Phuket\u2019s are spectacular. So much so that many Thais travel to the island just to watch them on Western New Year\u2019s Eve, especially from Cape Phrom Thep. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in my opinion, Kata Beach sunsets are unbeatable\u2014beautiful and full of atmosphere. It\u2019s quieter and more intimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During surf season, the waves here are bigger than at Kata\u2014perfect if you\u2019re more experienced and Kata feels too tame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Surin_exclusiva\"><\/span>4. Ao Sane: snorkeling<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ao Sane is a small, rocky beach with just a narrow spot to get into the water on the left side, which gets wider depending on the tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The real magic is underwater \u2014 a rich coral reef full of marine life. Hands down, it\u2019s the best spot for snorkeling right off the beach on the whole island.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"362\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ao-sane.jpg\" alt=\"Ao Sane beach in Phuket\" class=\"wp-image-7396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ao-sane.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ao-sane-300x170.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>You get here via a dirt road \u2014 not the smoothest, but not too bad either \u2014 which keeps it from getting crowded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People come for the peace and quiet, to snorkel, or to go wind foiling, since some trips leave from here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the sandy area is small, there\u2019s a restaurant with good food, cold drinks, and sunbeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"caja-borde2\">\ud83d\udc4d <strong>Friendly Tip<\/strong>: If you want to snorkel, bring your own gear \u2014 there\u2019s nowhere to rent it here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"6_Yanui_kayak_y_corales\"><\/span>6. Yanui: kayaking and corals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yanui Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Phuket, with a quirky shape that, depending on your angle, looks like a W or an M, and with amazing turquoise waters. The best view is from Windmill Viewpoint \u2014 don\u2019t miss it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/yanui-playa-de-phuket.jpg\" alt=\"Yanui beach from the viewpoint\" class=\"wp-image-7386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/yanui-playa-de-phuket.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/yanui-playa-de-phuket-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Yanui Beach and Koh Man on the right<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a peaceful spot, but it has one small downside: in some areas, the sand smells like dog urine from the local dogs. If you stay close to the shore, you won\u2019t notice it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So why did I include it here? Easy \u2014 it\u2019s a fantastic spot for snorkeling, both right off the beach and behind the big rock in the middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also rent a kayak for just 100 baht (about \u20ac2.65) per hour \u2014 the cheapest rate I found on the island. Paddle to the small island right in front (Koh Man), which has an even better coral reef than Ao Sane. The variety of fish is huge, so if you\u2019re into snorkeling, this is your place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"caja-linea\">\ud83e\udd3f If you\u2019re a strong swimmer, you can reach Koh Man without much trouble. It\u2019s a short swim, and you can see the seabed clearly the whole way. Just wear fins, watch for boats, and don\u2019t even try it during monsoon season. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"caja-borde translation-block\">\u2705 <strong>Friendly Tip:<\/strong> Don\u2019t forget to get travel insurance for your next adventure. Freedom: beautiful<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Freedom Beach is surrounded by jungle, and getting there isn\u2019t the easiest, which keeps it nice and peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The walk is worth it \u2014 it\u2019s stunning and great for snorkeling. At the main one, entry is 100 baht (\u20ac2.65). If you go a bit further along the road, there\u2019s another path where you can usually walk down for free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, there have been times when people who came down without paying were hassled \u2014 especially during the pandemic, when visitors were few.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t feel like walking, vans charge 100 baht each way \u2014 definitely worth it for the uphill ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_Mai_Khao_mirador_de_aviones\"><\/span>9. Mai Khao: plane spotting<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mai Khao is one of the last beaches in the north of Phuket and also one of the longest, stretching for 11 kilometers. Its size keeps it peaceful, even in high season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s right next to Sirinat National Park, surrounded by wild, natural scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what really makes it famous is the plane spotting viewpoint at the southern end. From there, you can watch planes land and take off just above your head. Banana: beautiful cove<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Not too long ago, Banana was a hidden beach and one of Phuket\u2019s true gems, thanks to its tricky access that kept it peaceful.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"528\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-banana-en-phuket.jpg\" alt=\"banana-beach-in-phuket\" class=\"wp-image-7407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-banana-en-phuket.jpg 528w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-banana-en-phuket-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I say \u201cwas\u201d because when I went back at the end of 2024, it had changed a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To my surprise, many palm trees had been cut down and several bars and restaurants had opened. Access is now much easier, so the peace and quiet are mostly gone \u2014 except early in the morning. Still, it\u2019s a beautiful spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parking costs 100 baht for cars and 40 baht for motorbikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"15_Karon_extensa\"><\/span>15. Karon: wide and spacious<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Karon is almost 3 kilometers long and, while it\u2019s not Phuket\u2019s most spectacular beach, it\u2019s great for a calm day out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like other large beaches, even when it\u2019s busy it never feels packed \u2014 there\u2019s space for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-karon.jpg\" alt=\"beach-karon\" class=\"wp-image-7409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-karon.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-karon-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-karon-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>You can snorkel at both ends and spot some marine life, though the south is better thanks to more coral. In the north, be careful \u2014 currents can be strong if you swim far from the coastline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"caja-linea\">\ud83d\udc49 That&#039;s why I always recommend snorkeling with fins in Phuket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can rent surfboards, try other water sports, or just relax on a sunbed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Karon area also has plenty of restaurants, so you definitely won\u2019t go hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"16_Nai_Thon_de_postal\"><\/span>16. Here\u2019s the good and the bad so you don\u2019t waste your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Panwa<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Panwa Beach is gorgeous to look at, with white sand and postcard-perfect turquoise water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your plan is to just lie down and stare at the sea, great. But if you want to swim or snorkel, forget it\u2014the water barely reaches your knees even after walking 200 meters out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s calm all year, but more for admiring than swimming, like most beaches on the east side of Phuket and neighboring Koh Sire. That\u2019s why they\u2019re usually empty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Patong<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, Patong is the ugliest beach on the island. Crowded, dirty sand, and way too noisy. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/patong.jpg\" alt=\"patong\" class=\"wp-image-7405\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/patong.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/patong-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Its only real perk is the location\u2014it\u2019s right in the heart of Phuket\u2019s nightlife, and if you stay there, you can just walk to the beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also plenty of street food and water sports like jet skis and parasailing\u2026 but if you\u2019re looking for a beautiful beach, this isn\u2019t it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Rawai<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Rawai Beach is dirty because of all the boat traffic and isn\u2019t good for swimming. Many tourists stay here thinking they\u2019ll have a beautiful beach nearby and end up disappointed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upside: it\u2019s cheaper than other areas, has lots of restaurants and street stalls, and long-tail boats leave from here to nearby islands. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/muelle-de-Rawai.jpg\" alt=\"Rawai-pier\" class=\"wp-image-7404\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/muelle-de-Rawai.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/muelle-de-Rawai-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a nice pier where the water looks cleaner. But if you stay here, you\u2019ll need transportation to get to Phuket\u2019s best beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Paradise<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Paradise Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, and I used to recommend it. But because of the mafia-style management, it\u2019s now on this section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They\u2019ve always forced you to pay for transport even if you wanted to walk down, which is ridiculous since all Thai beaches are public by law.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"461\" src=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-paradaise.jpg\" alt=\"beach-paradaise\" class=\"wp-image-7402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-paradaise.jpg 640w, https:\/\/viajerosactivos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/playa-paradaise-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In 2025, they took it further: now they charge 200 baht just to step on the sand, and they built a beachside pool that costs 400 baht without including anything (packages with extras start at 1,500 baht). They also check your bags so you can\u2019t bring your own food or drinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, the beach is stunning. If you\u2019re in the mood for a beach club day and don\u2019t mind spending, it could still be worth it.
