At first glance, comparing them may seem unfair since Bali is an Indonesian island while Thailand is a country. However, Bali does not fall short in everything it has to offer.
In this article, I'll outline all the differences I've noticed based on my three years of living in Southeast Asia, particularly in Thailand, and exploring other countries in the region.
Thailand vs Bali? 19 differences
1. Tourism
When it comes to tourism, both places have been catering to visitors for quite some time, so they're well-equipped in terms of infrastructure and hospitality.
Still, I'll point out some slight differences below concerning transportation and the locals' friendliness.
2. Visas
If you are from the USA, UK, Canada or Australia, you do not need a visa for these two destinations. However, there is an important diference.
When it comes to traveling to Thailand, you won't have to deal with any visa processes because there's a visa exemption. This means that upon arrival, they'll stamp your passport, and you're good to go. You'll have 30 days to stay without paying anything, and then you can renew for another 30 days.
Several European countries also benefit from visa exemptions, including France, Finland, and Germany.
On the other hand, if you're heading to Indonesia, you won't have to apply for a visa at the embassy and wait for approval.
However, you will need a Visa on Arrival, which you can obtain upon arrival at the Bali airport or at another airport in Indonesia, or you can apply for it in advance on their official website.
This process costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiahs (29.78 euros / 31.86 USD), and it allows you to visit the country for 30 days.
That's why, in terms of visas, Thailand has a slight edge—it's a bit easier and it's free.

3. Language
When it comes to language, both destinations are well-versed in tourism, making it easy to find English speakers. They may not be completely fluent, but it's usually enough to communicate effectively.
Using a translator app on your phone is a helpful option to avoid any language barriers. Rest assured, people in both locations are friendly and eager to assist.
4. Which place is cheaper, Thailand or Bali?
Overall, Thailand tends to be more budget-friendly, making it a top pick for backpackers exploring Southeast Asia.
One significant advantage is that flights to Bangkok are often cheaper than those to Bali.
However, that's not to say you can't find affordable travel options in Bali; it just requires booking flights well in advance.

In Thailand, careful destination selection can stretch your budget significantly. For instance, the northern region typically offers lower costs compared to popular islands like Phuket or Koh Samui.
Likewise, both Thailand and Bali accommodate budget travelers well, with plenty of inexpensive lodging options and affordable scooter rentals.

When it comes to lodging quality, both countries maintain high standards, similar to those found in Europe.
Additionally, there's a diverse range of accommodation options available to cater to various budgets.
The key distinction is that in Bali, you'll encounter accommodations such as villas that are exceptionally stunning, nestled in lush natural settings, equipped with all the luxuries and infinity pools that could entice you to stay indefinitely.
While this type of lodging is also available in Thailand, it's less common.
In Bali, prices skyrocket during peak seasons, particularly in July and August.
On the other hand, in Thailand, prices fluctuate between seasons, but not as dramatically.

6. Public Transportation
One of the main differences between these two destinations is their public transportation. In Thailand, it's easy to get to most places you want to go using public transportation, and it's also affordable.
However, in Bali, public transportation options on the island are rather limited and won't get you very far. Choosing tours or hiring a driver for a few days is the norm, and it's not too costly.
Ultimately, getting around Thailand is more cost-effective than in Bali, despite Bali being only an island and Thailand being an entire country.

7. Driving
Thailand is notorious for its perilous roads where many fatalities occur each year, but Bali elevates the danger even further.
Driving in Bali is fast-paced, and its roads are particularly hazardous.
That's why driving in Thailand isn't suitable for everyone; it requires significant driving experience, and I wouldn't recommend driving in Bangkok at all.
But on the islands, you can easily rent a scooter and drive around without any issues.
On the other hand, in Bali, it's best not to drive unless you have experience driving in similar places.
8. Local People
In both Thailand and Bali, locals are known for their friendliness, helpfulness, and willingness to ensure your comfort. I believe this welcoming attitude is a key factor contributing to the popularity of these destinations.
Having lived in various areas of Thailand, I've observed a distinct contrast between the north and the south.
In the northern regions, Thai people tend to be warmer and more approachable, earning Thailand its reputation as the Land of Smiles.
Conversely, in the south, in the south, smiles may fade quicker if they sense you're not intending to make a purchase, but they still maintain a friendly demeanor.
On the other hand, in Bali, there are no big differences as it is a smaller territory.
However, one thing you might notice is that Bali tends to be a bit more on top of things when it comes to service.
9. Religion and Spirituality
Buddhism is the predominant religion in Thailand, with about 92.5% of the population adhering to it. The rest are mostly Muslims, especially in the southern region.
In contrast, Bali stands out because, despite Indonesia being largely Muslim, Bali practices Hinduism.
It's a unique branch known as Balinese Hinduism, specific to the island.
Both religions shape the distinct and hospitable nature of the local people.
Religion holds a significant place in the lives of Thai people, with many having personal shrines at home and making daily visits to temples.
Bali, often referred to as the Island of the Gods, offers a more spiritual experience, with religion expressed through vibrant festivals and an unmatched atmosphere of tranquility.
Furthermore, Bali boasts a thriving community of yogis and is renowned as the top destination for yoga retreats to unwind and recharge.
In Thailand, a destination similar to the spiritual essence of Bali is Chiang Mai, known for its uplifting energy. Even for someone like me, who isn't particularly spiritual or zen, the vibes are palpable.

Thai beaches outshine those in Bali in terms of beauty. While Bali does has some nice beaches, they simply can't compare to Thailand's.
In fact, Bali is not considered a beach destination, despite its beaches varying in sand type; there are white sandy ones and volcanic ones with black sand.
However, Bali's beaches offer excellent surfing opportunities due to the currents and waves, although they may not be ideal for swimming or relaxing in the sea.
Thai beaches are the typical postcard-perfect beaches with fine, white sand and crystal-clear waters – beaches that you'll find hard to leave.

14. Bali or Thailand for the Honeymoon?
Both places are popular choices for honeymooners, but the decision lies in your budget and preferences.
If you're keen on beach time and budget-friendly options, Thailand is the way to go. However, if you envision a serene honeymoon in a stunning locale, then Bali is the ideal choice.
15. Water and Adventure Activities
Here's another key difference: Bali is renowned worldwide as one of the top surfing spots. So, if you're eager to catch some waves during your trip, Bali's the spot to hit.
While Bali offers other water activities, they're not as varied due to the strong waves.
On the flip side, Thailand offers a wide range of activities available at reasonable prices. You can even surf during the monsoon months in the Andaman Sea off Phuket Island.

Each destination offers unique experiences, and I haven't met anyone who regretted choosing either one.
If you're looking for budget-friendly trips, transportation convenience, beaches, and nightlife, then Thailand is the obvious choice.
However, if you're seeking a more spiritual retreat, prefer a slower pace, and crave relaxation, then Bali is the perfect fit.
