Armenia Travel Guide

Armenia is a country with a rich and fascinating history, once a key stop along the Silk Road. It’s home to several UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the city with the most UNESCO-listed landmarks in the world—it has six!

In this small country, you’ll also find breathtaking landscapes, delicious cuisine blending Asian and European influences, excellent wines, and the world’s best brandy. Even Churchill claimed it was one of his secrets to longevity. Quite the health tip from him, right? 😅

This guide to Armenia is a compilation of all the articles I’ve written after spending a year living in the Caucasus. While I was based in Georgia, I visited Armenia several times and completely fell in love with it. It’s easy to feel at home here, thanks to the warm and welcoming locals who are always ready to help with a smile.

The goal of this guide is to be your go-to resource to travel Armenia. And as always, if you have any questions, just leave me a comment below, and I’ll do my best to help you. 😉

Planning Your Trip to Armenia

If this is your first time planning a trip to Armenia, you might wonder if it’s safe to visit. I can assure you it is, despite the ongoing conflicts with Azerbaijan.

That said, it’s best to avoid border areas and stay updated on the situation. The good news is that Armenia’s main tourist attractions are far from those regions.

In the article below, you’ll find everything you need to plan your vacation to Armenia, including details on safety, visas, the best time to visit, currency, and plenty of helpful tips.

How Many Days to Spend in Armenia?

To cover Armenia’s must-see spots, you’ll need at least a week—2 to 3 days for Yerevan and the rest to explore the rest of the country.

Armenia Travel Itinerary

Check out the travel itinerary below for a detailed guide to exploring the best of Armenia on your own.

Armenia Must-Sees

Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, is a gem. It’s filled with charming historical corners and offers a vibrant atmosphere with a good range of cafes and restaurants.

The article below includes an in-depth guide to Yerevan, the visit to the Cascade Complex, and a guide with the must-sees in Armenia.

Accommodation

Armenia has a wide range of accommodations to suit all budgets, and prices are generally lower than in the US, UK and European countries for hotels of similar quality.

👍 Friend's tip: If you’re traveling during the high season (July or August), I recommend booking several months ahead to secure the best prices.

Since the country is relatively small, you can base yourself in Yerevan and take day trips to explore most of the main attractions.

In this webiste you can check all the accommodations deals in Yerevan. I recommend staying in the city center so that most of what you need is within walking distance during your stay.

How to Get Around Armenia

If you’re planning to explore Armenia on your own, getting around Yerevan is easy. Public transportation and walking are great options since most of the key attractions are within walking distance.

However, traveling outside the capital can be a bit more challenging. Public transport options are limited, and many tourist spots aren’t accessible this way.

That’s why, if you’re visiting Armenia for vacation, you have two main options for exploring the country:

  • Driving: This is the most convenient way to get around. I recommend renting a car on this website to find reliable local car rental companies with great prices.

  • Joining Tours: Tours are a fantastic option for a hassle-free experience. In the article above on What to see in Armenia I’ve shared the tours I personally took.

Below, you’ll find a detailed article on all the available options for getting around Yerevan and the rest of the country.

I’ve also included another article on how to make the most of your trip by visiting Georgia. It covers the best public transportation between the two countries, ticket prices, and other alternatives.

Outdoor Adventures for Active Travelers

If you’re an active traveler looking for adventure, Armenia is perfect for skiing, hiking, and trekking.

Skiing

The top skiing destination in Armenia is Tsaghkadzor, a resort that’s been popular since Soviet times and continues to draw winter sports enthusiasts.

The resort is on Mount Tanegizon at an altitude of 1,840 meters, it offers skiing, snowboarding, and even snowmobile rentals.

Hiking and Trekking

Dilijan National Park is one of the best spots for hiking in Armenia. It’s known for its breathtaking mountain views, lush forests, and waterfalls.

You can explore the park on your own if you rent a car, or you can join this day trip.

For a more immersive experience, consider multi-day trekking adventures, such as this 7-day trek.

Fun Facts About Armenia

In the article below you can read fun facts about Armenia’s history, culture, people, and cuisine, as well as its unique water fountains and more. It also includes Churchill’s famous remarks about Armenian brandy.

The photo in the article shows Armenian apricots, which are incredibly sweet and flavorful—the best I’ve ever tasted! I share all the details about them in the article. 😋

Final Thoughts

I hope this Armenia travel guide helps you plan an unforgettable trip to this fascinating, lesser-explored country that still holds on to its ancient traditions and culture.
