Thailand weather: When is the best time to travel to Thailand?

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that the weather in Thailand varies depending on the time of year and the region. So, in this first section I'll tell you about the general weather for the whole country. Then, in the next one, I'll explain each region in detail so you can plan your trip well.

The seasons in Thailand can be divided into two according to rainfall: dry season and rainy season. As for temperatures, they could also be divided into: hot season and cool season, although there are areas of the country where they do not vary as much.

Dry season: January to March

This is considered the best time to visit Thailand if you want to enjoy the beaches and islands of southern Thailand.

Rainy season: May to November

The rainy season, also called monsoon season in Thailand, is usually characterized by short, heavy showers that leave a cool air afterward. Well, actually it's the feeling of coolness - it's not that the temperatures drop, but rather the contrast of the stifling humidity before the rains.

If you're looking for the best dates to travel to Thailand and don't mind the rain, this time of year has two advantages: lower prices and fewer tourists. However, keep in mind that some outdoor activities may be cancelled, such as hiking trails, visits to national parks and boat trips.

Also, the rainy season in Thailand varies by region. Below, when I talk about the regions, I'll tell you more details, because if you have flexibility in choosing the dates, I recommend avoiding the months of heavy rain, when there may be flooding.

👉 Important facts about rainfall:

  • Rain showers usually last a few hours, it is rare for it to rain all day.
  • Floods are rare, there have been several in 2024, but this is not the case every year.
  • The rainy season is not like a tap that is turned on and then off, but rather there are a few months of transition.
  • Please note that the beginnings and ends of the different seasons are not precise, although they are based on historical data, they may vary by days or weeks from one year to the next.
  • Thailand is a tropical country, so it rains all year round, but much less during the dry season. Below in the regions section you have graphs where you can see the rainfall month by month.

Hot season: March to May

Between March and May, Thailand experiences its hottest season, with temperatures that can exceed 35°C. Although this is not the best time to travel to Thailand if you cannot tolerate the heat, it is perfect if you plan to spend time on Thai beaches or on the islands of Thailand, where you can always cool off in the sea. In addition, in the south of Thailand the rise in temperatures is more subtle.

Cool season: November to February

This is a time of year with more pleasant temperatures in the north and centre of the country, making it perfect for visiting cities.

Summary of the seasons

In conclusion, The best months to travel to Thailand are from December to February, which combines the dry season and pleasant temperatures. Therefore, it is perfect for outdoor visits, going to the beach and excursions to the islands. It is also more bearable to visit cities such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the rest of the north of the country without excessive heat.

If you are planning to travel around Thailand, this is the most convenient time to get around the country.

Burning Season

The burning season, known in English as burning season or smoky season, is when farmers burn fields to prepare them for crops before the rainy season.

Normally, farmers start burning in December and as the months go by there are more farmers burning, so from February to April is when there is more pollution.

wat-chedi-luang-temple-chiang-mai

This is happening in Chiang Mai and northern Thailand, which are now the most polluted areas on the planet, surpassing places like Bangladesh.

Although no one talks about this, you might want to know if you have respiratory problems like asthma or bronchitis. Smoke can have a very bad effect on your breathing when you go sightseeing, and even more so on hiking and trekking routes. This happened to me when I lived in Chiang Mai, in fact, it was the reason I had to move to the south.

How to avoid the effects of pollution?

  1. Travel in another seasonIn November the dry season begins and the burning season has not yet started.
  2. Go to the beginning of the burning seasonThe more time passes, the more pollution there is.
  3. Wear an N99 mask when you are outdoors, one that filters out pollution particles or at least an N95. If you travel during the peak months of the burning season, when you take off your mask, you will see that it is blackened. 😷

Thailand is known for its vibrant festivals and cultural events, which can make your trip even more special. Here are the most famous and colorful festivals in Thailand.

  1. Songkran (Thai New Year): Held from April 13 to 15, this is Thailand's most famous and fun festival. Celebrations include water throwing in the streets, parades, and traditional rituals. It's a unique experience, but be prepared to get very wet.
  2. Loy Krathong: Celebrated in November, during this festival Thai people release small rafts decorated with candles and flowers into rivers and ponds across the country.
  3. Yi Peng: Celebrated in Chiang Mai on the same dates as Loy Krathong, it is also known as the Lantern Festival, filling the sky with floating lanterns.
