Armenia is a country with a rich and fascinating history through which the Silk Road passed, it is full of UNESCO sites and there is the city with the most World Heritage Sites in the world (it has 6).
In this small country you will also find beautiful landscapes, delicious cuisine with Asian and European influence, excellent wines and the best brandy in the world, which Churchill confessed was one of his longevity secrets. What health advice Churchill gave! 😅
This guide to Armenia is a compilation of all the articles I have written, after living in the Caucasus for 1 year.
Specifically, I was living in Georgia and while I took the opportunity to visit Armenia several times.
A country that I love because it is easy to feel comfortable with its loving people, always with a smile and willing to help.
The idea is that it will serve as your guide in Armenia so that you can travel on your own and as always, if you have any questions, leave me a comment below and I will help you in any way I can. 😉
Get Ready for Your Trip to Armenia
If you are preparing your first trip, you may be wondering if it is safe to travel to Armenia and I can confirm that yes, it is safe despite the armed conflicts with Azerbaijan.
However, it is recommended not to visit border areas and it is important that you stay informed.
Likewise, the main tourist attractions of Armenia are quite far from that area.
In the article below you have everything you need to organize your vacation to Armenia, where I talk in depth about security, visas, when to travel, the currency and with many tips.
How many days to spend in Armenia?
If you are going to travel to Armenia to see its essentials, you will need to dedicate at least 1 week, 2 or 3 days to Yerevan and the other days to visit the rest of the country.
Armenia travel itinerary
Below you have a route through Armenia with all the best of the country that will help you prepare your trip on your own.
Essentials of Armenia
The capital of Armenia, Yerevan, is a gem, full of beautiful corners steeped in history and at the same time it is a vibrant city with a good range of cafes and restaurants.
Below you have an article about Yerevan with everything there is to do, an article in detail about the Cascade Complex and another about the rest of the country.
Accommodation
On your trip to Armenia you will find varied accommodations for all budgets with prices lower than those in Spain for hotels of the same quality.
👍 Friend's tip: If you are going to travel in high season, that is, in July or August, I recommend that you book several months in advance to get good prices.
As the country is quite small, you can visit most of it with Yerevan as a base and then make 1-day visits from there.
In this Booking link, you can see all the accommodation offers in Yerevan, I recommend staying in the center to have everything within walking distance and get around on foot in most cases.
How to get around Armenia?
To travel to Armenia on your own, you will have no problems getting around Yerevan by public transport or on foot, because the most interesting sites are within a relatively short distance.
On the other hand, to visit the rest of the country, public transportation options are few and you will not find a way to go to many tourist places.
Therefore, if you go to Armenia on vacation, you have two options to explore the country:
- Driving: it is the most practical option to explore the country, to rent a car I recommend this search engine which has serious local companies at a very good price.
- Join the excursions: They are an excellent option so you don't worry about anything. In the article above on What to See in Armenia I recommend the excursions that I took. If you don't speak English, you will also find some excursions with guide in Spanish in Armenia, here in the link, you have to select the filter “only activities in Spanish”.
Likewise, below you have a very detailed article on how to get around the capital and the country, with all the alternatives.
Also, another article in case you want to take advantage of the trip to Armenia to visit Georgia, with the best public transportation between both countries, with prices and other alternatives.
Outdoor Adventures for Active Travelers
If you are an active traveler and want to do some more adventurous activity, I tell you that Armenia stands out for its ski slopes and mountain areas for hiking and trekking.
Ski
The quintessential destination for skiing in Armenia is Tsaghkadzor, which has been quite popular since Soviet times and attracts many tourists in search of winter sports.
The resort is on Mount Tanegizon at 1,840 m high, where you can ski, snowboard or rent snowmobiles.
Hiking and trekking
One of the most interesting places in Armenia for hiking is the Dilijan National Park which has a beautiful mountainous landscape, forests and waterfalls.
You can go on your own by car or join a hiking tour like the full day link.
If you are looking for a more serious hiking experience and to see the country, there are also multi-day alternatives how is this 7 days.
Fun facts about Armenia
In the article below you can read about the curiosities of this very interesting country, about its history, people, culture, gastronomy, the curious water sources and more.
It also includes what Churchill said about Armenian brandy.
The photo in the article is Armenian apricots, which have a unique sweetness and flavor, the best I have ever tasted and about which I will also tell you all the details. 😋
Recommended Armenia Guides
If you want to buy a travel guide to Armenia, I recommend this one from Lonely Planet which includes Georgia and Azerbaijan, and is very complete.
Furthermore, as Armenia is a country with little tourism, it is the only one that you will find more or less updated in Spanish.
If not, this one is also from Lonely Planet in English It is the most recent.
Final Thoughts
I hope that this travel guide to Armenia helps you prepare your trip to this still little-explored country that preserves its ancient traditions and culture.
Keep this guide handy; it'll be a valuable resource throughout your journey, providing access to all my articles. If you found it helpful, don't hesitate to share it with fellow travelers. Have a wonderful trip! 💚
